First grade students need to be able to use addition and subtraction to solve problems with numbers up to 20. The great thing about word problems is that you can use a drawing, number model, or even objects to help you solve the problem! First grade students also have to be able to solve word problems that ask them to add three numbers together. Try it! John went to the store and bought 2 apples, 3 bananas and 4 pears.
