First grade students need to use their fact families to figure out what equations are equal. For example, when asked if 4+1 is equal to 3+2, students should be able to answer yes or no. First graders are also asked to solve problems that leave one number out, like a mystery! Practicing fact families helps students with these types of problems. For example, if we know that 8+3=11, we can solve the problem 11-8=?. We know 8+3=11, so we know the missing number has to be 3. Click on the links below to practice addition and subtraction equations!
When given the following problem, how do you know the answer?
8+5=13
13-5=?
It's easy! I know that 8+5=13. If I think about a fact family, and put these on a fact triangle, I know 13-5=8!
