First grade students need to be able to use math strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. Some strategies you can use are counting on, making 10, and using fact families to help. You can also use sums of 10 to help you solve problems. For example, I need to solve 6+5. I may not know 6+5, but I know that 6+4 = 10. I can make my problem into 6+4+1, which is the same as 10+1, which equals 11. Click on the links below to practice adding and subtracting numbers up to 20.
