2.MD.D: Represent and interpret data.
Second grade students need to be able to measure several different items, and then plot those items on a line plot. Second graders should also be able to draw a picture graph and a bar graph, and fill in data for up to four different categories. Second grade students should be able to read a picture graph or a bar graph with information already filled in, too. Click on the links below to practice representing and interpreting data!
This chart shows you the parts of a graph. When making a bar graph, it is helpful to use these math vocabulary words to talk about your graph with classmates.
This chart explains how and why we make graphs. Students can make different types of graphs, like bar graphs and pictographs.
For Students!
Click here to access a video that teaches all about tally charts and bar graphs. You can follow along as Annie and Moby learn about surveys, and how to interpret that data by putting it on a tally chart, then a bar graph. At the end of the movie, you can print your own survey to complete!
This is a great interactive online quiz about reading and interpreting graphs. Choose "Bar Graphs" or "Line Graphs". Next, choose "Easier Content", "Normal Content", or "Level" to adjust the difficulty. Take this quiz multiple times to build your knowledge of reading and interpreting many types of graphs!
For Teachers!
Click above to download an Excel spreadsheet for classroom use. This can be used individually or on a Smartboard, and allows students to edit the spreadsheet to add data from a survey. As you add data, the spreadsheet will create the bar graph of the student information entered.
