First grade students need to know that in addition, no matter which order we add the numbers in, they still equal the same amount. For example, 4+2=6, and 2+4=6 too! The same thing goes for adding three numbers. If you add 2+3, then add 5, you get 10. If you add 3+5, then add 2, you still get 10 because you're adding the same numbers together.
